Frequently asked questions.
Want to know more about FLARE? You’re in good company. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about us, our process, and our capabilities, along with the answers.
What does FLARE stand for?
It stands for Fusion Linear Accelerator Radiation Effects.
How much do you charge?
Pricing for services varies depending on need and scope. Schedule a call for pricing based on your specific use case.
What’s your availability?
We have availability for your radiation testing needs throughout 2025. Please contact us to schedule time.
What is your flux?
The > 10 MeV neutron flux varies from 2E9 to 1E8 n/cm2/s, depending on position within the irradiation cavity. The total neutron flux varies from 5E9 to 5E8 n/cm2/s over the same area.
How long does it take to get my parts back?
The return timeline of irradiated components varies based on irradiation time and elemental composition of the items, as well as your facility’s ability to receive and possess activated components. Non-irradiated components are typically shipped back within two weeks of the test. We are also able to ship radioactive material and can facilitate disposal of highly activated components.
Can you receive activated materials?
We can receive radioactive material (activation products) with atomic numbers 1-83, inclusive. Please contact us with your specific needs to ensure compliance with our radioactive materials license.
Do you have facility clearance?
While the FLARE facility is ITAR compliant, it does not possess a facility clearance.
How much cable length do I need to supply with my test article?
You need 50 feet of cable.
How do you validate the fluence on my part?
We validate with foils.
How many parts can we fit in the highest flux location?
As an approximate line source, the flux is isotropic in the radial direction from the center target, which has an approximate diameter of 6 inches.
What is the largest size part you can accommodate?
The maximum dimensions for parts we can test are 32 inches wide, 11 inches deep, 35 inches tall.
What are some things to do if I’m in town waiting for my parts to be irradiated?
Janesville offers a variety of activities, from touring our botanical gardens and historical society to exploring nearby parks and outdoor venues to venturing further to the Frank Lloyd Wright Visitor Center, historic auto attractions, or Wisconsin’s state capital.
